Week 2 NFL Betting Preview – Steelers vs 49ers

Niners Have Tough Date with Grumpy Steelers

By Charles Jay

The Pittsburgh Steelers looked kind of clumsy and disorganized on defense as they opened their season against the very capable defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. Now they have a little extra time for preparation as they face off against the San Francisco 49ers, who surprised some Vietbet customers with their ability to pound the football against the Minnesota Vikings in one of the Monday night games. The kickoff for this contest is 1 PM ET at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, and after that opening whistle, you can challenge the NFL odds while the game is in progress through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.

Pittsburgh lost a 28-21 decision in their first game using new defensive coordinator Keith Butler. They allowed Tom Brady to throw for 281 yards and four touchdowns, while failing to create a turnover. Later on, Brady remarked that he thought the Steelers looked a little confused in their secondary. It appears that they were not all that prepared. Since that was a Thursday game, now they have extra time to get themselves ready.

That’s not the case with San Francisco, which is coming off a Monday night game and now has to travel across three time zones for the 1 PM start. Yes, they will fly to Pittsburgh, but they traveled very capably by land against Minnesota in their opener, getting 168 yards out of Carlos Hyde and overcoming some early mistakes for a 20-3 victory. It was a sweet debut for new head coach Jim Tomsula, who took a lot of criticism after his hiring because he was relatively unknown.

One of the things that was rather surprising about Pittsburgh’s performance last Thursday was the fact that they were able to move the football on the ground in the absence of Le’veon Bell, who is still serving his suspension that stemmed from a marijuana arrest a year ago. DeAngelo Williams, who played with Carolina last season, stepped in and ran for 127 yards. This was important, and he really does not have to do the same kind of thing here to open up opportunities for Ben Roethlisberger in the passing game. Big Ben had 351 yards through the air, and this might be the situation where San Francisco’s attrition on defense may be exposed. Vietbet patrons have to remember that the Niners faced Teddy Bridgewater, just starting his second season, last week, but Roethlisberger is in a whole different category.

And by the same token, Colin Kaepernick is not as artful a passer as Brady, so he won’t be able to exploit weaknesses in the Pittsburgh secondary as easily. Everybody knows that with the departure of defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, the Steeler defense is in many ways a work in progress. They have lost several leaders from last year’s edition, and it may take a while for them to get their legs under them. San Francisco will wind up largely dependent upon what Hyde can do for them.
