Titans vs Lions September 18th, 2016 – Week 2 NFL Betting Preview

Titans vs Lions September 18th, 2016 Week 2 NFL Betting PreviewThe Tennessee Titans had some bad luck last week, which ruined what otherwise was a pretty good performance, especially by the defense. And in that game, they were facing a backup quarterback. Such is not going to be the case this week, as they are up against the Detroit Lions, who looked very much in sync offensively in posting a road victory in their season opener. The Titans vs Lions game kicks off at 1 PM Eastern time at Ford Field in Detroit, and VietBet customers will have the opportunity to place wagers even after the opening whistle, as they partake in all that Live Betting Ultra offers.

A Closer Look at the Tennessee Titans:

  • Season record: 0-1 SU,0-1 ATS
  • Tennessee is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games
  • Tennessee is 0-5 SU in their last 5 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 5 of Tennessee’s last 6 games

Tennessee caught itself a break, in a manner of speaking, as their opponent last week, the Minnesota Vikings, had to go with backup quarterback Shaun Hill in place of the regular starter, Teddy Bridgewater, who is out for the year with a knee injury. And they held Hill to just 18 completions in 33 attempts. In fact, they held the Vikings without an offensive touchdown for the entire game. But unfortunately, they made some mistakes, including both interception and a fumble that were returned for touchdowns. And they just didn’t get enough going offensively against the rock-ribbed Minnesota defense. Even though the final score was 25-16, they still feel they have something to build on, and not without justification.

Tennessee will have to get better results out of its running game, because, after all, Mike Mularkey had planned for what he calls and “exotic smashmouth” style football, leading with the run and then letting quarterback Marcus Marriota use his dual talents to best advantage. But last Sunday Mariota threw the ball 41 times, which would be way too much for an offensive approach like this. The Titans only ran it 22 times, and for only 64 yards. It was actually kind of a surprise, given those numbers, that they would still be in the game. But the defense, in its second year under coordinator Dick LeBeau, a Hall of Famer, led them to a 10-0 advantage at the half.

There is no question that the Titans have to run the ball, but VietBet patrons who saw that game know that DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry both contributed by catching passes out of the backfield, combining for 76 yards in receptions. And they have found a sleeper in the draft, with fifth-round pick Tajae Sharpe, who caught seven passes for 73 yards. Sharpe, who went to the University of Massachusetts and played under Mark Whipple in a pro-style offense, was taken in the fifth round, and he may be the same kind of story as Minnesota Stefon Diggs, who wound up leading the Vikings in receptions in 2015.

A Closer Look at the Detroit Lions:

  • Season record: 1-0 SU,1-0 ATS
  • Detroit is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games
  • Detroit is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 5 of Detroit’s last 7 games

Detroit had to come up with some alternative plans after wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who is no doubt headed to the Hall of Fame, retired in the off-season. What they have done a step up the pace under offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, who seemed to breathe some life into this unit after he took over midway through the 2015 season. The Lions had 448 yards against Indianapolis, even though the defense didn’t necessarily do its part.

Matthew Stafford had a damn good day last week, completing 31 out of 39 with three touchdowns. His running backs combined for 10 receptions and 120 yards, and Ameer Abdullah had some good runs on his way to 63 yards on 13 carries. But there are holes in the defense; Detroit allowed 450 yards to the Colts, who scored 35 points in the last 34 minutes of the game. So it’s a good bet that the Titans will be able to navigate a little bit easier against this stop unit than they did against Minnesota.
