Titans vs Jaguars December 24th, 2016 Week 16 NFL Betting PreviewAt the outset of the season, Mike Mularkey, the Tennessee Titans’ head coach, who made many scratch their heads when he had the “interim” label taken off, spoke of playing a style of football he termed “exotic smashmouth.” Well, things have not worked out too badly for his club, which is alive and well in the playoff race. Titans vs Jaguars – CJ’s Take:

Mularkey used to be the coach in Jacksonville, so he is well aware of the franchise’s ineptitude in recent years. A nine-game losing streak was too much for owner Shad Khan to take, so after the Jaguars blew a lead and lost 21-20 to the Houston Texans last week, he fired Gus Bradley, the head coach who had compiled a 14-48 record at the helm. Things got a little awkward, because Bradley was fired before the team ever left the stadium, yet he took the team charter back to Jacksonville. There are some unhappy players who have commented about the way this thing was handled. Doug Marrone, the assistant head coach who brought the Buffalo Bills to a winning season two years ago, will take over for the final two games of the season.

Currently the Titans have a record of 8-6 straight-up, and they are 7-7 against the pro football pointspread. The Jaguars are 2-12, with a 6-8 record against the points.

Who knows if there is going to be a total housecleaning in Jacksonville by the time next season rolls around. David Caldwell, the general manager, has been asked to find a permanent replacement for Bradley, so the speculation has been that his job is safe for the time being. The name of Tom Coughlin has been circulated widely in connection with the position. Coughlin, if you recall, is probably the most successful coach this franchise has had, and then after leaving he led the New York Giants to two Super Bowl victories.

One subject of much discussion has been the future of Blake Bortles, who was taken high in the first round as the “franchise quarterback,” but has not progressed as was hoped. Bortles has been responsible for 20 turnovers, and he’s completed only 58% of his passes. There have been some rumors that one of the reasons Bradley was fired so abruptly was that he stayed loyal to Bortles as his starter. Realistically, there are not a lot of alternatives.

VietBet patrons have to admire the way the Titans have gone about their business. They have scored back-to-back victories over the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs, despite scoring a total of 32 points in those games. They love to do the ground-and-pound, and with Dick LeBeau, they have a very wily defensive coordinator. Spearheading Mularkey’s ground attack is former Dallas Cowboy DeMarco Murray, who has 1224 yards on the season. And Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry has been progressing as well. Marcus Mariota, another Heisman winner, has thrown 25 touchdown passes and suffered only 21 sacks. Tennessee is the best in the league in scoring touchdowns in the red zone, converting 72.7% of the time. That often marks the difference between victory and defeat.

These teams met before, in Week 8, and the Titans pounded their way to a 36-22 victory, despite Bortles throwing for 337 yards in the game. In terms of the secondary. Jacksonville has done a better job, allowing a little less than 211 passing yards per contest and just 16 touchdowns through the air. They have just been lacking in almost every other area.
