Texans vs Raiders – CJ’s Take:

The Raiders are cruising along right now, with a 7-2 record that is good enough for a tie atop the AFC West. They certainly haven’t done it with defense, although they’ve actually been improving in recent weeks. And they should be fresh off a bye week. Derek Carr is being mentioned in a lot of circles as a possible MVP candidate, and why not? He has thrown for 2505 yards, with a sizzling 17-3 ratio of touchdowns to interceptions.

The Texans, at 6-3, are the leaders in the AFC South, although they are now being pressured by the Tennessee Titans. The defense IS Houston’s strong suit, as they have been pretty good at preventing the big play on the part of opposing offenses, and this has been the case even as they have been without JJ Watt, the All-Pro defensive end who is out for the rest of the season. But the offense has held them back to a certain extent.

We are not going to sit here and say that Houston has gotten relentless pressure on opposing quarterbacks, as they have only 19 sacks, which does not place them among the league leaders. However, there is a guy up front who has stood out in Watt’s absence. Whitney Mercilus has registered 4.5 sacks, and he does force opposing defensive coordinators to make adjustments. And Jadeveon Clowney, who was the #1 overall draft pick two years ago, is tied for third in the league in tackles for loss.

The Texans are not the most explosive team in the world, and part of it involves the quarterback. As VietBet patrons are well aware, Brock Osweiler signed with the team for big money in the off-season, and he has had his ups and downs, as might be expected from anyone who had only seven career starts under his belt before the start of the season. Osweiler is throwing the ball short – REAL short – in the interests of safety. But this creates short results. Osweiler has an average of 5.6 yards per attempt, and no current starting quarterback in the NFL is lower than that.

One of the other factors that has undoubtedly been part of the consideration for the oddsmaker is that Oakland has been a superb road team, winning all five games and covering all of them against the football pointspread. Meanwhile, Houston is noted for being rather manageable for opponents when they venture from home; in fact, the 24-21 victory they had over Jacksonville – a team that has won two games – last week was the only road game in the “win” column for them.

Next up for both teams:

  • Houston home to San Diego Sunday, November 27
  • Oakland home to Carolina Sunday, November 27
