Texans vs Colts Odds – CJ’s Take

Houston dropped a 27-20 decision to the New England Patriots in the season opener, then just laid an egg against the banged-up Tennessee Titans the next week. Against the New York Giants at home in Week 3, they just couldn’t make the right plays at the right time. They moved the chains, getting 385 passing yards out of DeShaun Watson, but they made Eli Manning look like a Super Bowl champion once again, allowing him to complete 25 of 29 passes. This is not the same defense it used to be; that much is clear.

The Colts are only 1-2, but you can tell they’re playing with a lot more intensity and purpose under first-year head coach Frank Reich, who spent last year as the offensive coordinator for the world champion Philadelphia Eagles. For the most part, they had the better of the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1, but let a couple of big plays go up against them, including a late fumble recovery for a touchdown. Then they were utterly dominant in Washington in a 21-9 victory. Last week they lost a 20-16 game to the Eagles that they easily could have won. We cannot sit here and tell you that Andrew Luck is back to his old form, but he’s getting a little more comfortable at quarterback and his teammates are playing like they expect to win.

The Colts are throwing the ball about twice as many times as they are running it, but Luck is not really getting the ball down the field, instead focusing more on a short passing game. His average of 5.3 yards per attempt is less than pedestrian, and social media lit up after he was removed from the game in favor of Jacoby Brissett when it was time to throw the Hail Mary in the play of the game against the Eagles. Reich insisted that was no real reflection on Luck, who in turn admitted that Brissett probably has the better long-range arm.

The truth of the matter is that the Colts and Luck are going to have to get back the confidence in spreading the field and attacking the secondary. They have one guy who can do it in TY Hilton, but he’s averaging only 10.5 yards per reception. What has really kept Indianapolis alive is the play of the stop unit, and that is indeed a surprise after this team finished 30th in the category of Total Defense last season.

Houston may figures it finds itself in a “must-win” situation here, considering the competition they have in the AFC South. You have to wonder how long Bill O’Brien will keep his job as well. Watson can improvise, to be sure, but even with all that talent, he’s been sacked 10 times and has lost a lot of the consistency that marked his limited action last year before going down with an injury. It was somewhat encouraging that he was able to connect with Will Fuller for 101 yards last week, but Watson has already lost the ball four times due to turnovers.

The Texans have now lost nine straight games going back to last season and unbelievably, an Indianapolis team without the injured Luck scored a two-game sweep over them last season. Maybe that pattern continues.
