Steelers vs Ravens Odds – CJ’s Take

These teams played each other in the fourth week, and Pittsburgh was held to just 19 rushing yards in a 26-14 defeat. And Baltimore was without cornerback Jimmy Smith, who was on suspension but is available now. It can be argued that Pittsburgh has put itself on the right track since then, and that Ben Roethlisberger, who was 27-47 in that first matchup, is regaining his sharpness. But the fact remains that Antonio Brown has never had a 100-yard game in Baltimore.

The Ravens have lost three of their last four games, including a rather non-competitive 36-21 defeat at the hands of the Carolina Panthers last week. There defensive numbers are pretty impressive, however, and you could make the argument that they were the better team in their last home game, despite losing 24-23 to the New Orleans Saints. In that contest, they could have taken the game into overtime, but Justin Tucker, one of the best placekickers ever, missed an extra point for the first time in his career.

Pittsburgh has some of the elements necessary to make life difficult for Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco, who is largely immobile. They have 24 quarterback sacks, so expect head coach Mike Tomlin to dial up the pressure. And Baltimore has struggled all season to put a ground game together, averaging just 3.6 yards per attempt. The flip side of this is that the Ravens’ offense is second-best in the red zone this season, in terms of scoring points and touchdowns. And despite that missed extra point, Tucker is about as close to automatic as you are going to find.

One of the difficulties Baltimore is going to experience, however, is that they have a banged-up offensive line, with a couple of starters out and another one hobbled. This means that they are going to have to do something to keep the Steeler defense honest. Can they do that? Surely Flacco has some explosive weapons, including wide receiver John Brown, who averages just shy of 19 yards per catch, and one of three wideouts with 30 or more receptions.

Baltimore’s defense is best in the NFL in both yards and points allowed on a per-drive basis. But we do respect the ability of big Ben to spread the ball around, so that Brown isn’t as critical a part of the overall mix. In fact, Juju Smith-Schuster is actually the team’s leading receiver, and tight end Vance McDonald has become more and more of a weapon. Additionally, James Conner, who has been the #1 back in place of Bell, has three straight 100-yard games.. They’re focused enough. So we are inclined to grab the points in this one.
