The New Orleans Saints’ quarterback, who already holds the NFL record for completion percentage, might be taking himself to new heights this season. And his heroic efforts last Sunday, when he hit 39 of 49 passes and brought his team back repeatedly against the Atlanta Falcons, has to go down as one of his all-time greatest efforts. Saints vs Giants Odds – CJ’s Take

Brees set the record at 72% completions last season, and he is actually on pace to shatter it. Of course, there is a long way to go, but he has connected on 80.6 of his throws, and has eight TD passes without an interception. He’s done well enough that the Saints can get by without running the ball that much. Mark Ingram is sitting out the last of a four-game suspension, and Alvin Kamara has been responsible for only 141 yards on the ground. Last year the Saints had more balance in the attack, and it made a difference, so we would imagine that they will try to move back toward that as the season progresses.

Meanwhile, the Houston Texans’ defense made Eli Manning look like a record-holder last week, as they allowed him to complete 25 of 29 passes. Odell Beckham went over the 100-yard mark again, and rookie Saquon Barkley had a touchdown run and 117 yards from scrimmage in the 22-17 win.

These games thus far with the Giants have to be considered a referendum of sorts on whether you think they are ready to assume the position of a playoff contender, or whether their high hopes are just a mirage. The jury is probably still out on that question, although they can boast of pretty good results out of Berkeley, who said 21 receptions to go with his 216 rushing yards, and of they’ll Beckham, who has successfully returned from injury. And he will UI Manning was probably expecting more of a challenge from Houston, he didn’t get it.

Quality quarterbacks, and even journeyman like Ryan Fitzpatrick, have been moving at a swifter pace against New Orleans’ offense, which as yielded 10.9 yards per attempt. So it is understandable if you think the Giants can have their way. Eric Engram, the very talented tight end who has caught 74 passes in 18 NFL games, has a sprained MCL, so he’ll be unavailable for a while, to be replaced by Rhett Ellison. One positive thing the Giants did last week was the bench right tackle Ereck Flowers and replace him with Chad Wheeler. First-year head coach Pat Shurmur says Flowers took the benching “in stride.”

Without Engram, the Giants lose some of the flexibility in the passing attack. Maybe this points things more toward Beckham and Sterling Shepard. Maybe Barkley gets more play. No one should make too much of the Giants’ offensive “explosion” last week, as they had not scored more than 21 points only once in the previous 13 games. They have also gone “under” the total in eight of their last ten.
