Redskins vs Eagles Odds – CJ’s Take

The Redskins had to press McCoy into the starting role, the first time in four years that has happened to him, and he responded by throwing for 268 yards but also three interceptions in the 31-23 loss at Dallas. What was particularly galling was that Washington was unable to get Adrian Peterson untracked. He ran just twelve times for 35 yards, and we would think that getting some production out of him would be critical to taking the pressure off McCoy. Will that happen this time around?

Well, the Eagles, who counted depth in the defensive line is one of their strengths on the way to a Super Bowl victory, have surrendered 4.9 yards per rushing attempt, so there is probably going to be the opportunity for the Redskins to advance a little.

There are a number of reasons Philadelphia has not been able to duplicate its success from last season. One of them is that they have suffered injuries to key people. Running backs Jay Ajayi and Darren Sproles have gone down with injuries, and at different points in time they have missed a lot of people in the secondary. In fact, this might be an ideal time for McCoy to exploit the Eagles’ pass defense.

The Eagles have not won two games in a row at any point this season. And you have to wonder whether a 25-22 victory over the New York Giants last week serves as a “buy” signal for them, considering the Giants outgained them by a 402-341 margin. Carson Wentz, who threw for 236 yards in the game, has been adequate, but he has not approached the MVP level like he did last season (at least before injuring his knee). What has been a pleasant surprise is the presence of Josh Adams, who put up gaudy numbers for Notre Dame last season but went undrafted. With the injuries in the backfield, Adams has stepped in and averaged 5.2 yards per attempt on the ground.

Tight end Jordan Reed has 50 receptions for the Redskins, far more than anyone else on the roster. There is nonetheless an ensemble of pass-catchers in the rotation, but while McCoy does know the system Jay Gruden employs, he’s not as natural of it as Smith was in the role. It was kind of a mystery last week as to why the Giants did not use Saquon Barkley very much in the second half, after a very productive first 30 minutes of play. Don’t expect Gruden to make that same mistake if he has something good going with either Peterson or the receivers.

If you are into technical trends, this might be of interest to you – Washington has been an underdog seven times this season, and covered six of those games, while Philadelphia has covered just one of its last seven on its home field.
