Raiders vs Broncos Odds and Preview
The Raiders came out all fired up, but as the game progressed, they succumbed to the Los Angeles Rams’ superiority, losing 33-13 in the nightcap of the Monday night doubleheader. Derek Carr is a special project for Gruden, but he might wind up being a work in progress, as he threw three interceptions. This offense seemed lost at times, and Carr only had five completions to his wide receivers, which can’t be what Gruden had in mind.
The Broncos have to be encouraged with the kind of offense they displayed last weekend, as they totaled 470 yards against the Seattle Seahawks in a 27-24 victory. This was the Denver debut for quarterback Case Keenum, who piloted the Minnesota Vikings into the NFC title game last season and came over as a free agent. It was also the debut for Bradley Chubb, the first-round draft pick out of North Carolina State, who could, before all is said and done, combine with Von Miller to form the NFL’s most ferocious pass-rushing duo.
Keenum threw for three touchdowns and 329 yards, but he was also intercepted three times. Nonetheless, the Denver faithful were happy, because they get good play out of two rookie running backs, Philip Lindsay and Royce Freeman, each of whom ran for 71 yards. There was a lot of balance in this Denver attack, which went with power formations on 32 offensive snaps. The 470 yards from the Broncos was more than they had in any game in either the 2016 or 2017 seasons. It looks as though Keenum will have a nice relationship with wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (135 yards) and rookie Courtland Sutton, who caught two passes for 45 yards.
And the Denver defense sacked Russell Wilson six times, holding Seattle to 13 first downs. In Gruden’s quick-release offense, we are not sure they’re going to get to Carr all that often. And observers say that Chubb is having a lot of difficulty with the “coverage” part of his job as an outside linebacker. That might be an area Oakland can exploit. Yes, Carr turned the ball over three times, but Oakland actually gained more yards than the Rams did. There may be some extra value in the number, because of the 20-point loss by the Raiders, but the 33-13 defeat they suffered was probably closer than the score indicated. No, they don’t have Khalil Mack, and talk about that trade to the Bears most likely serve as something of a distraction. But the effect of that will probably dissipate a little bit as time goes by. We are tempted to take the points with Oakland in this one.
