Panthers vs Rams – CJ’s Take:

The Rams took a trip of 5400 miles, all for the purposes of taking it on the chin at the hands of the New York Giants, who intercepted Case Keenum four times, with Landon Collins taking one of those in for touchdown. And yes, the quarterback controversy has certainly begun. Of course, we are talking about a decision on whether the Rams should put Jared Goff into the lineup. Goff was the #1 overall choice in the NFL Draft, and sooner or later he has to start developing. It has been the decision of the Rams to go slow with Goff, who played in the “Bear Raid” system at California, which is not totally conducive with the NFL’s pro-style attack. And if the Rams were completely out of the playoff race by now, head coach Jeff Fisher may have pulled the trigger. But with a 3-4 record, which places them no more than one game out of a wild-card spot, this team is not waving the white flag just yet.

The Panthers looked a little bit more like themselves last Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, getting off to a 24-0 lead and then holding the Cardinals off for the 30-20 victory. Cam Newton did not have an especially strong day, completing only 14 of his 27 passes, and he was full of complaints after the game for what he thought were cheap shots on the part of opposing pass rushers. He may be right about that, but he didn’t engender much sympathy from the press.

What Carolina really did well was shut down the Arizona running game, which had only 24 net rushing yards. Can they do that same kind of job this week? You know, one of the stories of the season for the Rams, as VietBet patrons are well aware, is their inability to get the same kind of production they got out of Todd Gurley last season. Gurley, who missed the early part of his maiden season as he was recovering from an injury, set the NFL on fire when he came into the league and eventually became the offensive rookie of the year. But this season he is averaging only three yards per carry.

As NFL bettors know, having an effect of running game takes pressure off the quarterback. And the ineffectiveness of this ground attack maybe one of the reasons Fisher is very hesitant to give Goff an opportunity just yet.

Sometimes teams come back strong after a bye week, and it would be our guess that these Rams did a lot of extra work in practice on putting together a few running plays that will actually work.

Obviously we don’t want to write off Carolina, even with their 2-5 record, because the coaching staff there is making an example of last year’s Kansas City Chiefs, who won 10 straight games to reach the playoffs after a 1-5 start. But let’s not write off the Rams either; they have already scored division wins over the Seattle Seahawks and Cardinals, and if they didn’t completely go to sleep in the season opener against San Francisco, they might be right in the thick of things with a bunch of other 4-3 teams in the NFC.

Next Up for both teams:

  • Carolina home to Kansas City Sunday, November 13
  • Los Angeles at New York Sunday, November 13
