New York Giants vs Washington Redskins – CJ’s Take:

The Redskins can get to the playoffs with a victory against the Giants, as mentioned, and the only way they would be denied in that case would be if a number of things happened that are too numerous to mention. They could also advance if they lose, but only if the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers play to a tie on Sunday night. They would not have been in this position if they had been able to beat the Carolina Panthers at home a couple of weeks ago, but they came a pretty flat in that one.

There has been so speculation about the Giants this week, because this is a team that is locked into the fifth playoff spot and cannot improve, even with a victory. In other words, would be worthwhile to start the regulars? Well, the Giants will be playing their starters on Sunday, and we remember how the strategy worked out for Tom Coughlin when he did so in the season finale against the New England Patriots, as eventually that experience against the Pats help them in their eventual win over New England in the Super Bowl. We know it’s not the same scenario, that obviously this team needs to get sharp, one way or the other, on offense. The Giants have scored 19, 17, 10 and 14 points over the last four games.

The Redskins put on a show defensively last Sunday in the 41-21 victory over the Chicago Bears. They intercepted five passes, and even though Josh Norman picked off two, the real confidence-builder for Bashaud Breeland had to be HIS two interceptions, because he has been burned off and on all year long. Normally, Washington is not the stingiest defensive team out there; they have allowed the opposition to complete him a 66% of their passes, and they’ve given up 264 yards per game through the air. Also, the Redskins have allowed their foes to convert third downs at a 47.6% rate, and that sounds like quite the invitation for the Giants, who need to “get well” somehow on the attack end.

Eli Manning has not had the best of seasons, and perhaps the fact that the offensive coordinator he has been working with the last couple of seasons, Ben McAdoo, who introduced him to the West Coast offense, was elevated to head coach and had broader responsibilities to deal with. Whatever the reason, Manning has been intercepted 16 times, so in some ways he’s getting back to his old bad habits. VietBet patrons, however, also remember him as a clutch quarterback who has brought home to Super Bowl victories. But the Giants simply have to put themselves in better situations; their ground attack has been pitiful, averaging 3.5 yards per carry with only five touchdowns rushing. So Manning has to make up a lot of ground on third down, more often than not, and the Giants are just 34.6% in conversions.

Obviously, the “equalizer” in a sense, is Odell Beckham, who can take the ball coast-to-coast on virtually any given play. Beckham has a total of 1323 receiving yards, and in this game, he could go over the 100-catch mark. Can he get some support from the other people split out wide? Sterling Sheperd has really had his moments as a rookie receiver, catching eight touchdown passes, and Victor Cruz is always potentially dangerous. But that doesn’t really compare to the number of targets – LEGITIMATE targets – Kirk Cousins can throw to. DeSean Jackson, Jamison Crowder and Pierre Garçon all have over 800 yards. Tight end Jordan Reed, who is generally regarded as one of the best in the business, has not been healthy this season, but he’ll play through a shoulder injury because this game means so much.

We are sure that not a lot of people have faith the Giants will keep their first-team players in the game all the way, but if it’s close, and New York as an opportunity to extract some revenge for the 29-27 loss they suffered at the hands of the Redskins in Week 3, we just might see the best out of them.
