Falcons vs Seahawks – CJ’s Take:

At this moment, Matt Ryan is looking very much like the early choice for Most Valuable Player. He has completed 69% of his passes for over ten yards an attempt, with 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Yes, those are just numbers, but the Falcons have moved with ease against both of last year’s Super Bowl participants, scoring victories over the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos. Against Denver’s vaunted stop unit last week, they had 372 total yards, and achieved a pretty nice level of balance, as they got their ground attack going. One of those running backs, Tevin Coleman, also had 132 yards in receptions.

Of course, the Falcons were going up against a rookie quarterback (Paxton Lynch) making his first NFL start. That will not be the case this week, as they face off against Russell Wilson, who has had a bye week now to heal up his knee and ankle injuries. The Seattle offense has been inconsistent at best, but obviously they can still play some defense, and that is why they are the first-place team in the NFC West at the moment, with a 3-1 record.

While it is true that Atlanta passed the test last week against the Broncos’ defense, they will face another stiff challenge this week. Seattle has good numbers on defense, allowing only 3.3 yards per carry and 5.9 yards per passing attempt. Of course, they have not faced an offense that is humming the way these Falcons are.

But this much has to be said about Seattle – Wilson has thus far thrown only one interception in 133 attempts; Jimmy Graham, the tight end who this team had such high hopes for, is averaging 16.6 yards per catch to lead the team, and Christine Michael, who has had to fill a gap at running back after the retirement of Marshawn Lynch and the injury to Thomas Rawls, is logging the ball for 4.6 yards per carry.

What is really going to be interesting for VietBet patrons to watch is the battle between Julio Jones and the Seattle secondary. Jones already has 517 yards in receptions, so he is definitely the big weapon. But he only had 29 of those yards last week against Denver, and we know all about the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom” group of defenders. This won’t necessarily be a one-on-one battle between Jones and Richard Sherman, as Sherman confines himself to one side of the field. But if Jones tries to go over the middle, people like Kam Chancellor, the All-Pro safety, are going to make him pay. Ryan was able to make some things happen, even as his big weapon was taken away from him, and we have to also keep in mind that Seattle is not big on blitzing, preferring to get a “push” out of its four-man front. They have been rather successful at it so far, with 12 sacks.

Next up for both teams:

  • The Falcons host the Chargers Sunday, October 23rd
  • The Seahawks visit Arizona Sunday, October 23
