Cowboys vs 49ers – CJ’s Take:

The Niners, as everyone saw, defeated the Los Angeles Rams 28-0 on the first Monday night of the season. Of course, their defense was not necessarily impenetrable, as the Rams are the kind of team that is going to struggle on offense from time to time. But that was nonetheless a very successful debut for Chip Kelly in his new assignment as head coach. Kelly obviously wants to turn up the tempo on offense, and he thought he had the right guy in Blaine Gabbert, but he is finding out why Gabbert is considered by many to be nothing more than a career backup. He threw for only 119 yards last week against Seattle, and has completed only 55% of his passes with a 5.5-yard average. Those are numbers that are less than pedestrian. Could we actually seen appearance by Colin Kaepernick this week? Hey, it will draw viewers – the New York Times is actually seeking out his opinion about the presidential debates these days.

Through the first three games of the season, Prescott, the fourth-round draft choice out of Mississippi State, has completed 67% of his attempts for 767 yards and – this is notable – ZERO interceptions. That is one thing Jason Garrett has to be very pleased about. When you don’t turn the ball over, you usually leave your team in a position where they can stay close in the game, and Dallas may be just one receiver’s mistake away from a 3-0 record. Of course, when we talk about that mistake were talking about Terrence Williams not getting out of bounds in the waning moments against the Giants in the season opener – a game Dallas lost 20-19.

Rookie running back Ezequiel Elliott finally broke out for 140 yards last week against the Chicago Bears, and judging from the number of carries he has had (71) compared to that of fellow running back Alfred Morris (17), we would say that Garrett is leaning on Elliott a great deal to be his featured back. VietBet patrons will be watching the status of wide receiver Dez Bryant this week, as he has a hairline fracture in his knee. He will likely be a game-time decision, as Garrett says he is hopeful that Bryant will be able to suit up on Sunday.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that the field at Levi Stadium has been customarily slow, and as a result, opponents who come into the building don’t usually excel offensively. As bad as the Niners were last season, they still held their opponents under 17 points per game on this field. With raw rookies in key positions for Dallas, that could become a bigger factor than most people expect.
