2018 AAC Championship Odds – CJ’s Take on Memphis vs UCF:

UCF (11-0 SU, 8-3 ATS) was not respected by the people who made the selections for the four-team playoff last year, despite going through the season without a loss. But then they beat Auburn, a team that previously beaten both Alabama and Georgia (who played each other in the national title game) in the Sugar Bowl. Even so, here they are, unbeaten again, after a coaching change (with Josh Heupel arriving in place of Scott Frost) and they are just 8th in the football playoff rankings.

McKenzie Milton, the UCF quarterback who was largely responsible for the revival in this program, and also produced 79 TD’s between this season and last, suffered what was described as a “gruesome” leg injury in a 38-10 win over South Florida, and there was some talk about amputation. But blood flow has been restored to the leg, and he has actually been able to take a few steps. Of course, he is lost to this team, so they are going to depend upon Darriel Mack, who is big (6-3, 230 pounds), durable and a dual threat who has been built and recruited for this offense.

UCF is not all about offense; they couldn’t get where they are (24 straight victories) without being able to stop people as well. And they do just that, using very effective penetration from the defensive line to do it. The Knights are seventh in the nation in tackles for loss, as they average eight per game. Interestingly enough, however, they have not generated as much pressure on opposing passers as other teams that are high in TFL’s, as they are just 57th in the country in sacks.

But they have been able to create some havoc against the opposition, creating 25 takeaways while giving the ball up just nine times, and that has produced a +16 ratio, the second-best in the nation. They are tough in the red zone, allowing opponents to score points just 73.5% of the time. And the offensive line has done a great job in allowing sacks (18th best) and tackles for loss (11th). This is going to be important as Mack needs to be allowed to operate.

Memphis (8-4 SU & ATS) has a machine-like offense, ranked sixth in the country in both yardage and scoring, and they have perhaps the most potent weapon on the field in Darrell Henderson, who is big and very strong and leads the nation in all-purpose yards. He averages a whopping 8.6 yards per carry. Moving the chains at a rate of 49% on third down, this is a difficult team to hold down. In last year’s conference title game they took UCF to double overtime before losing 62-55, and in the regular season they lost 31-30. So they know how to keep it close.

Will the absence of Milton be the factor that helps Memphis ruin UCF’s perfect season?
