Clemson vs Virginia Tech – CJ’s Take:

Clemson is ranked third in the nation, not just in the two major polls but also in the all-important Playoff Rankings, so the assumption is that all they would have to do is win this game and they will be in the four-team field that will fight it out for the title. Let’s put it this way – it would take an awful lot for some other team to leapfrog them. Dabo Swinney’s team ran up the score on poor South Carolina last week, to the tune of 56-7, and helping DeShaun Watson pad his stats a little in a quest for Heisman votes. On the season, he has 3626 passing yards with 34 TD passes. he has also thrown 14 interceptions, which does not buttress his Heisman argument.

Virginia Tech has been inconsistent this season, and they are hanging on to a spot in the national rankings, appearing at #18 in the Coaches’ poll and #19 by the Associated Press.

The Hokies did not start the season out well for new coach Justin Fuente, who came over from Memphis to replace Frank Beamer, who had spent 29 yards at the school. They had their clock cleaned pretty good by Tennessee (45-24) but then got hot, slapping North Carolina 34-3. They have won by a field goal over the likes of Duke, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, but lost as a double-digit favorite against Syracuse and Georgia Tech. Those were troubling losses, because they involved offensive schemes they were apparently unprepared for and didn’t handle too well. However, they were 19th in the nation overall on that side of the ball, and it was a prudent move on the part of Fuente to have retained long-time defensive coordinator Bud Foster.

As far as the offense was concerned, Fuente went out and got junior college star Jerod Evans, who was a true revelation, in that he threw for 3045 yards, ran for 713 more and had a nifty ratio of 26 touchdowns to five interceptions. VietBet patrons have seen that he is such a big part of the offense that the assignment for the Clemson stop unit is rather simple. And this is a capable group, as, despite having to replace seven starters from last year’s squad, allowed just 17 points a game and ranked 8th overall in the nation.

Will Watson get some meaningful help? Well, it’s interesting; running back Wayne Gallman, who had 1527 yards last season, had just 943 this year, but his per-carry average was about the same. And there was a big difference made with the presence of Mike Williams, an NFL-caliber wideout who missed almost all of last season with an injury, then came back and caught 79 passes for 1114 yards. The Tigers have won five of their games by less than a touchdown; will they be able to pull away in this one?
