Chiefs vs Jets Odds – Betting Preview

The Chiefs won their first five games of the season, scoring at least 24 points in each of them. Their offense was humming at the time, and it looked ike Kareem Hunt was on his way to the Rookie of the Year award. But hunt has slowed down considerably; the first-year man out of Toledo has just 232 yards from scrimmage over his last four games. And the Chiefs have lost five of their last six, bringing their record to 6-5, both straight-up and against the points. They hold only a one-game lead in the AFC West over the Los Angeles Chargers and Oakland Raiders. So it looks like a runaway is now a race that is very tight.

The Jets have probably exceeded expectations with their 4-7 straight-up record (6-4-1 ATS), as a lot of members of the media around the New York area doubted they can even when more than a game. But after winning three of their first five, fans are disappointed that they are not contending for wild-card berth. Their last hope probably went out the window last Sunday, as they blew another fourth-quarter lead in losing to the Carolina Panthers (35-27). They allowed 17 points in the fourth quarter, including a punt return touchdown and a Josh McCown fumble that was also taken back for a score. McCown has been sacked 35 times on the season, but on balance the Jets can’t complain all that much, as he’s completed 67% of his passes with 17 touchdowns and has a 95.3 quarterback rating. So as far as switching signal-callers is concerned, Todd Bowles is not all that anxious to give second-year man Christian Hackenberg, who has not taken a snap in NFL game, his big opportunity just yet.

The Jets have actually not done all that badly on defense this season, forcing three-and-outs 28.7% of the time, which is fourth-best in the NFL. But they just can’t play 60 minutes of every game; they have given up more fourth-quarter points than any team in the league aside from the Indianapolis Colts. But of course, the Chiefs are not all that reliable in the stop unit, giving up more first downs than any other team in pro football. There is little doubt that the defense suffers from the absence of safety Eric Berry, who is out for the season, but this club, which has only 21 quarterback sacks, simply has to do a lot better than that.

And on offense, they had only 236 total yards last week against the Buffalo Bills, a team that had allowed 135 points over its previous three games. And it was simply no excuse for Hunt to have just 17 yards on 11 carries. So Reid, who justifiably has a lot of faith in Smith, who is 69% accurate with 19 touchdowns and only four interceptions, has to start pushing the right buttons somewhere on his play chart.

Bowles had expressed some disappointment in Robbie Anderson, the team’s top receiver, who had caught touchdown passes of 33 and 54 yards against the Panthers. After the second TD, he looked into the camera and said “hey, will y’all vote for me for the Pro Bowl?) That’s not really the worst thing that could possibly happen to this team, and as long as Anderson produces – as he has been – somebody in the Big Apple should be happy.
