Chiefs vs Broncos Odds – Monday Night Football Betting Preview

Chiefs vs Broncos Odds 2018 Week 4 MNF Betting PreviewSo far there has been very little stopping the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense, which is a lesson to all of us “experts” who thought that they may have to take baby steps with the relatively-inexperienced Patrick Mahomes. Well, three games into the NFL season, Kansas City is a perfect 3-0 and Mahomes has set a record for most touchdown passes in the first three games of the season. So take THAT, experts. On Monday night, the Chiefs take their show back on the road as they face the Denver Broncos in an AFC West encounter that will begin at 8:15 PM ET at Mile High.

Chiefs vs Broncos Odds – CJ’s Take

As everyone knows, coach Andy Reid made the decision that Mahomes, who was Kansas City’s first-round draft pick in 2017, should get the opportunity to start, sooner rather than later. Alex Smith, who had led the league in passing efficiency last season, was traded to Washington to clear the way.

Thus far, Mahomes has thrown for 895 yards and 13 touchdowns without an interception. Wow.

Denver has had its ups and downs with its new quarterback. Case Keenum has a little more savvy than his predecessor, Trevor Siemian, but he is also prone to mistakes, having thrown five interceptions. Sometimes his decision-making has a lot to be desired. Fortunately for him, he faces a Kansas City secondary that has been found wanting.

We have talked about looking for that spot where a guy like, say, Ryan Fitzpatrick would fall apart, because we have seen that happen before. But Mahomes has no such history, so it is more problematic trying to guess where that might happen. He has a rocket arm and is also lucky in that he has some teammates who are used to taking small plays and turning them into big ones. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who has averaged 22 yards a reception, is a prime example of this. Sammy Watkins got into the act with a touchdown catch last week, and no one should underestimate tight end Travis Kelce (114 yards last week).

However, the Chiefs appear to be like the NFL’s version of former Denver resident Ron Lyle, who was often willing to take a big punch or two in order to land a haymaker of his own. In other words, they don’t necessarily defend well. Everyone knew that there would be questions in the secondary, especially with Marcus Peters, who drew ire for kneeling during the national anthem, having been let go. Eric Berry, the future Hall of Fame safety, has still not returned to action, and pass rusher Dee Ford has been bothered by a strained groin (which is understandable). With all the business Mahomes has done, the Chiefs have actually been outgained through the air by their opponents.

The Broncos may not have an aerial circus going, but they have some dangerous receivers in Emmanuel Sanders (289 yards), Demariyous Thomas and rookie Courtland Sutton. Rookie Phillip Lindsay, who wasn’t even drafted, has averaged six yards a carry, and maybe this shouldn’t be a huge surprise when you consider this franchise’s success with unheralded running backs. Kansas City has covered five straight meetings with the Broncos, and it wouldn’t shock us to see them pull away. But it also wouldn’t be a surprise to see a wild one that sails over the total.
