Chargers vs Panthers December 11th, 2016 – Week 14 NFL Betting Preview

Chargers vs Panthers December 11th, 2016 Week 14 NFL Betting PreviewWell, the situation seems to have deteriorated around the Carolina Panthers, who were so good last season, racking up a 15-1 regular-season record and then moving through to the Super Bowl. But they were basically stripped of a victory of the Denver Broncos in that one, and maybe some negative vibes put forth by Cam Newton have carried through to this season. It also hasn’t helped them that their star cornerback picked up and went to another team. Whatever the reasons, Carolina takes a 4-8 record (3-8-1 ATS) into Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers, who are pretty much out of the picture in the AFC. This game will get underway at 1 PM ET at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, and as CBS is televising it on a regional basis, VietBet customers can place their bets, even after the opening kickoff, as they access Live Betting Ultra.

Chargers vs Panthers – CJ’s Take:

Josh Norman was the “shutdown” corner who made things difficult for opposing passing attacks, but he left in free agency and signed with the Washington Redskins. Charles Tillman, the wise veteran safety, retired, and there were other personnel losses in the secondary, forcing Carolina to go with very inexperienced people back there. So it has been easier for the opposition to throw against them, and in comes Philip Rivers, coming off a disappointing outing against Tampa Bay where he completed only 15 of his 26 passes and was intercepted twice.

We might normally say that the Chargers (5-7 straight-up, 7-5 against the pro football betting odds) have been snake-bitten, but the ways that they have lost games this season, which include some creative methods, have been basically their own doing. Let’s just say they could be going into this game as a contender, but unfortunately they are not.

Rivers has been intercepted 14 times this season, including four times in the fourth quarter against the Miami Dolphins, and it was probably fitting that Kiko Alonso took the final one back for a touchdown in another crushing defeat. San Diego did not start the season out well, blowing a three-touchdown lead at Arrowhead Stadium against the Kansas City Chiefs before losing in overtime. There have been some bright spots, however. They know by now that they did not waste a first-round draft pick on Melvin Gordon, who will likely go over the 1000-yard mark in this game (he has 992 yards currently). And after a long, well-publicized contract squabble, defensive end Joey Bosa has become a force to be reckoned with, racking up 5.5 sacks and generally being a very disruptive person – ON the field.

VietBet patrons have unquestionably seen a decline in Newton’s production. There’s no telling what kind of psychological effect last year Super Bowl had on him, but he was stripped-sacked a couple of times and did not give an admirable performance at the post-game press conference. This season he has completed less than 55% of his passes, and then last week he was essentially called out by his head coach, Ron Rivera, for a dress code violation and was benched at the start of the game against the Seattle Seahawks, which the Panthers lost 40-7, thereby effectively eliminating them from any playoff possibility. But this is a proud team, having won the previous three NFC South titles, and one would hope that they would not lay down.

One category in which the Panthers have excelled this season is in the red zone. The offense has scored touchdowns 68.6% of the time, which is second-best in the NFL, and the defense has held the opposition to just 44% touchdowns; only two other teams in the league have done better than that. The Chargers have beaten themselves with turnovers, coughing it up 25 times this season, but they also take the ball away an awful lot, leading the league in interceptions on a per-drive basis.
