Chargers vs Chiefs Odds – Betting Preview

The Chargers have won seven of their last nine games, and the defense has been nothing short of outstanding, allowing more than 21 points only twice. That was in their two losses; in their last three games they have allowed just 29, and in the last four they have outscored the opposition by a total of 78 points. Currently, they have a 7-6 straight-up record, and they are 7-5-1 against the football point spread. The Chiefs got off to their red-hot start on the strength of a lot of things, including top-level efficiency on the part of quarterback Alex Smith, the emergence of rookie running back Kareem Hunt, and Tyreke Hill’s success in becoming a full-time wide receiver. These guys are all effective, but defense has really failed this Kansas City team. They have given up on only almost 300 first downs, and that just won’t do. They had lost six out of seven games until last week, when they came to life a little, blowing out the Oakland Raiders in a game they led 26-0 before the Raiders scored 15 gratuitous points. Kansas City is also 7-6, both straight-up and against the spread.

The Chargers have been getting the job done on both sides of the football. Head coach Anthony Lynn promised when he took the job that this team was going to use the ground game to its advantage, but that didn’t look like it was going to be the case over the first three or four games. Lately, however, things have really even doubt for them, and last week against the Washington Redskins, they ran the ball as many times as they passed it (33). Interestingly enough, this is a team that is not far from being considered among the elite in the NFL, if you consider that three of their first four games were defeats by three points or less, where their kicking game failed them. Right now they are using their third different placekicker, Travis Coons, and he was perfect against the Redskins last week.

VietBet patrons who watched that game noticed that the Chargers had a huge yardage edge (488-201) and held Washington to just nine first downs. This defensive performance is no accident; while the Chargers have from time to time been vulnerable against the run (4.7 yards allowed per carry), they actually have more interceptions than they have allowed in touchdown passes, and they can get after the passer, with 37 sacks. Defensive ends Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram may both find themselves in the Pro Bowl, in fact.

And wide receiver Keenan Allen has been red-hot, catching 39 passes over the last four games. He’s got 1143 yards on the season, and Philip Rivers does not have a whole lot of negative plays (just 15 sacks, seven interceptions). So what the Chiefs will have to do is figure out a way to slow this Los Angeles offense down, something that has been somewhat problematic for them on an overall basis. In 13 games they have only 24 sacks, and if they allow Rivers to stand back there and throw, that’s go to put a lot of pressure on a secondary that has played without All-Pro safety Eric Berry.

History, however, has been on Kansas City’s side, as they had beaten the Chargers seven times in a row, including a 24-10 victory in the third week of the season. This time the Chargers may be ready to make it a different story.
