Giants Trying new offense as They Visit Lions

By Charles Jay

The New York Giants and Detroit Lions both suffered through tremendous disappointment last season as they vastly under-achieved. The Giants have turned to a new offensive system in an effort to cure some of their woes, but from the perspective of NFL bettors, it could create even more problems. The Giants and Lions meet up in the season opener on Monday night, with kickoff scheduled for 7:10 PM ET at Ford Field in Detroit.

The Giants finished with a regular season record of 7-9, both straight-up and against the football point spread. Detroit also had a 7-9 straight-up mark, and was just 6-9-1 against the points. They made a coaching change in the off-season, bringing in Jim Caldwell, who had previously been the head coach in Indianapolis.

In the Monday night NFL betting odds that have been established on this game by the people at Vietbet, the Lions are laying almost a touchdown:

Detroit Lions -6.5
New York Giants +6.5

Over 47 Points -110
Under 47 Points -110

Eli Manning, who has won two super bowls with the Giants, was especially erratic last season, throwing 27 interceptions, and that had to stop. So coach Tom Coughlin brought in a new offense of coordinator, Ben McAdoo, who installed the West Coast offense. As Vietbet patrons know, this was foreign to anything Manning had experienced before, and the growing pains have shown during the pre-season. Manning completed only 20 of is 41 passes during the exhibition schedule, and he averaged just 4.6 yards per attempt. He also got sacked five times, which was not a good sign. The Giants gave up 40 sacks last season, and as NFL bettors know, this new offensive scheme is designed for the quarterback to get rid of the ball quicker. McAdoo expects Manning to complete 70% of his passes in this offense, which would be tricky, since Eli has done that in less than 10% of his career starts.

NFL bettors know that the Giants would have liked to have Odell Beckham Jr., their first-round draft choice out of LSU, around to help Manning transition himself into the new scheme, but a hamstring injury has sidelined him. Victor Cruz is once again the main target, but the Giants are very excited about what their new running back duo can accomplish. They went out and acquired Rashad Jennings, who was impressive for Oakland last season, and also may have a sleeper in fourth-round draft choice Andre Williams, who gained over 2000 yards for Boston College last year. Unfortunately, David Wilson, the first-round pick from two years ago, was diagnosed with spinal stenosis and his football career is over.

One of the reasons Caldwell got the job in Detroit was that he was so impressive in the interview. He broke down every one of Matthew Stafford’s passes in the 2013 season and presented that to the team’s executives. Now it’s time to make Stafford – who has always put up big numbers – more consistent. They are trying to give him some variety; the Lions already have perhaps the best wide receiver in the game in Calvin Johnson, and in an effort to give him some support, they acquired Golden Tate, who won a Super Bowl with Seattle last year, and drafted tight end Eric Ebron in the first round. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who was signed to a five-year, $35 million deal by the Giants, will have the unenviable task of covering Johnson. And Vietbet customers should not lose sight of the fact that Stafford can also throw the ball to Reggie Bush, who can go “coast-to-coast,” so to speak, on any given play.
