The Denver Broncos made it to the Super Bowl two seasons ago behind a record-setting season from Peyton Manning, who had won his fifth MVP award. But as they say, what a difference a couple of years makes. Manning is now considered, by most people anyway, someone who is on his last legs. Manning had been, in effect, the coordinator of the Denver offense, virtually vaulting Adam Gase into head coaching consideration all by himself. But then John Fox was fired, and Gase followed him to Chicago. Gary Kubiak, who’d had lukewarm results in Houston but was a buddy of Broncos’ football boss John Elway, was hired, and he had his own ideas about how to implement an offense.
As it turns out, this wasn’t something Manning was altogether comfortable with, and there was some trouble adjusting because it didn’t include the no-huddle approach Peyton had so much success with. But apparently Kubiak was going to show who was boss, and Manning struggled. The result was 17 interceptions in ten games for Manning, and that is the second most in the league.
The Broncos go without a huddle sometimes, but for the most part it has been a matter of Manning having to adjust to the existing philosophy. So to a certain extent the jury is still out on whether he is at ease. Manning had missed seven games with an injury to his plantar fascia, and came back in the season finale to complete five out of nine passes against San Diego. In the playoff game last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he went 21 for 37, averaging six yards an attempt, and at least he did not throw an interception.
How much confidence did people have in Manning? Well, there was no shortage of talk about the proposition that Brock Osweiler, the guy who had replaced Manning, might be worthy of taking the job on a permanent basis.
