Toledo vs BYU – CJ’s Take:

BYU has played four tough opponents thus far, using a last-minute drive to beat Arizona, and then losing consecutive games to Utah, UCLA and West Virginia. However, they have covered all four games against the college football pointspread. And they are used to playing in the close ones, as these games have been decided by a total of nine points.

Toledo has covered all three of its contests thus far, but this has, against middling opposition – Arkansas State, Maine and Fresno State. But they have won nine straight road games, so they have the potential to be a very troublesome opponent.

After BYU has run through that particular gauntlet, maybe they are relieved to play a Mid-American Conference team. But Toledo would appear to have the scheduling edge, as they are coming off a bye week. They are also used to making money for their backers, as they are on a 15-2-1 ATS run. They have a first-year head coach, as Jason Candle was elevated from offensive coordinator after Matt Campbell took off for Iowa State. In the early going, quarterback Logan Woodside has shown some improvement, throwing 11 touchdown passes with only one interception.

The Cougars have a couple of quarterbacks who could do some damage. One of them is Tanner Mangum, but the one who has gotten the playing time is Taysom Hill, who has experienced injury problems the last couple of seasons and is known as someone who can run the ball about as well as any signal-caller in the country. He has shown some and improvement with his arm, but he is still not the most dependable thrower there is, and he has been intercepted seven times already. So as VietBet patrons know, this is a potential Achilles’ heel for this squad.

We will say one thing though – the BYU rushing game was upgraded this season by the return of both Hill and Jamaal Williams, so that put some pressure on the Toledo defensive line. Remember also that former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer is the new offensive coordinator with BYU, and he has brought that team back to a pro-style attack, contrasting with the spread that was being played under Bronco Mendenhall, who went off to Virginia.

The Rockets protect their passer very well, as they gave up only five sacks all of last season and none yet this year. As you may know already, the new head coach for the Cougars,Kalani Sitake, is the former defensive coordinator at Utah, where he was in charge of the nation’s top pass rush at one point. If they can’t get to Woodside, they may have trouble.
