Week 2 College Football Betting Preview BYU vs Boise State

Did the BYU Cougars win the battle but lose the war last week? Is that too dramatic a way to put it? They emerged victorious in thrilling fashion in the season’s opening week, but lost their on-field leader for the duration, and now have to regroup to an extent as they play host to the Boise State Broncos in a game that kicks off at 10:15 PM ET on Saturday. Vietbet patrons can continue their NCAA football betting after the opening whistle as they enjoy the excitement of Live Betting Extra.

Taysom Hill continued his hard luck career at BYU, and, in effect, ended it. He suffered a Lisfranc fracture on his foot, and gave way to backup Tanner Mangum, who proceeded to win the game on a Hail Mary pass to Mitch Mathews with no time left in the clock to beat Nebraska in Lincoln and spoil the Husker debut of new head coach Mike Riley.

So what happens from here? Good question. After this, Mangum has to face UCLA, then Michigan.

Boise State struggled a bit with Washington last week, as quarterback Ryan Finley is still a work in progress. He was 12 for 27 last year in limited action, and against Washington in the opener he was 16 of 26 for 126 yards. And BSU was held scoreless in the second half as they eked out a 16-13 victory.

But they may have something powerful going for them, which is a record of 23-1 against Utah-based schools going back to 1998.

Losing Hill (which has now happened for three seasons in the last four) is really tough, because he gave BYU a genuine threat on the ground as well. But without bad luck, this guy would have no luck at all, or so it seems.

Hill is from Idaho and so is Mangum. Okay, that’s trivia. But one of the more interesting things about the Cougars’ new QB is that prior to him getting onto the field against Nebraska, he had not played in an actual game since New Year’s Day of 2012. He is recently returned from a mission in Chile. So he is a true freshman at the age of 22. He had been a top recruit and nearly decided to go to Boise State before finally deciding on BYU.

Vietbet customers know that Finley had big shoes to fill, since Grant Hedrick was so effective for the Broncos last year, with 71% completions. Finley is renowned for his mental toughness; for one thing, he has come back from a torn rotator cuff.

Boise State really piled it on when these teams met last year. The Cougars had 637 total yards, more than doubling up BYU’s number, The Broncos led 41-16 at the half. That was on the “Blue Carpet,” but it doesn’t sound like traveling to Utah phases the Broncs all that much. So will we see the power of the “Hail Mary” have its effect for Mangum again?
