We already know that Denver is going to be depending very heavily on defense in this game. And there is no reason why they shouldn’t. The Broncos were best in the NFL in terms of the yards they allowed on a per-drive basis, as well as points per drive allowed. They yielded touchdowns on only 14.9% of their drives, which was fourth best in the league, and they forced their opponents to punt the ball away 47.2% of the time, which was third-best. They allowed just 3.3 yards per rush, and only one team had more than 120 yards on the ground against them. That looms very important, when you consider the Carolina has had at least 140 rushing yards in six of their last seven contests.
On the negative side, Denver is minus-2 in the turnover margin, which is a big handicap for them, since Carolina is so over-the-top in that department, at +28. And Peyton Manning, who was second in the NFL with 17 interceptions, even though he started only nine games, has thrown for 300 yards only twice, and not at all in his last 11 appearances. On an overall basis, the offense was not all-inspiring; they were 24th in yards and points per drive, and they were stopped for a three-and-out on 27.6% of drives, and only two teams in the league did that more frequently. As far as their ability to score touchdowns in the red zone, Denver was among a handful of teams that did it less than 50% of the time (47.7%, to be exact).

They have covered their last six games as an underdog. And Manning has not thrown an interception in his last 78 passing attempts.
Here’s a number to keep in mind if you’re really superstitious – Denver, the home team, has elected to wear white jerseys, which could be fortuitous, because teams wearing white have won ten of the last 11 Super Bowls.
