New Man at Controls as #1 Ohio State Visits Rutgers

By Charles Jay

The Ohio State Buckeyes have been the #1-ranked team in the nation all season, which makes sense for a team that won the national title in such decisive fashion last season and returned all of its key people. But they have been in a kind of “cruise control” mode thus far, doing enough to beat its opponents but only occasionally beating the football pointspread. Well, that didn’t appear to be good enough for coach Urban Meyer, who is making a change at the quarterback position as his squad meets up with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a Big Ten matchup that will begin at 8 PM ET at High Point Solutions Stadium in New Brunswick, NJ.

Cardale Jones gained a lot of praise in leading the Buckeyes to win over Wisconsin, Oregon and Alabama to finish out the 2014 schedule, and he won the QB job in the fall, but he has been so-so in his play, and it wasn’t until last week that JT Barrett really ignited this offense. In the second half against Penn State, Barrett blew open a close game with two TD passes and two more on the ground, rolling up 102 yards rushing to provide something that was in short supply with Jones – a real ground threat. So he will get the nod on Saturday night to see what he can do over a 60-minute period.

Jones has averaged just 2.6 yards a carry, which doesn’t really maximize what is possible in Meyer’s spread option offense. He also has a modest ratio of seven TD passes to five interceptions. he has been relieved by Barrett before, but it hasn’t really had a huge impact. And the Buckeyes, who took advantage of an injury to Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Brewer in the opener to come from behind and win by 18 points, have had close calls with Northern Illinois and Indiana, with uninspired performances otherwise. But Barrett drove them to a 38-10 win over the Nittany Lions, covering the 18.5-point football pointspread.

As Vietbet patrons probably remember, last year Barrett struggled when he first took over the job of the injured Braxton Miller, and the Buckeyes suffered a loss to Virginia Tech. But then he caught fire, with 34 TD passes, 938 rushing yards and eleven rushing touchdowns, gaining third team All-America honors. But then he got hurt as well, which led to the opportunity for Jones.

By the way, Ezekiel Elliott, who ended last season like a locomotive and had 1878 yards, is on pace to top last year’s totals. Of course, the Buckeyes would have to once again advance to the four-team playoff, but with 988 yards, he is averaging 141 per game. With five games left in the regular season, plus a conference title game, and either a bowl game or the playoff, he might reach the 2000-mark. That would be special indeed.
