Anyone who has been within reach of a TV, laptop or mobile device (which means everyone) is aware of the miscue on a punt with ten seconds left that handed Michigan State a victory in Ann Arbor two weeks ago. They can kick themselves forever, but the fact of the matter is that the monumental flub is the only thing that stood between the Maize and Blue and a win over a team that is still very much in contention for a spot in the college football playoff. So there is definitely some progress being made in Jim Harbaugh’s first season as head coach.

Minnesota’s well-liked coach, Jerry Kill, who has had a lot of health scares in recent seasons, and who has won 156 games as a college football coach, has announced his retirement, effective immediately, as he simply could not go on any longer. Kill suffers from epilepsy; he has had seizures on the sidelines before, and he disclosed that he had two of them before practice this past Tuesday. It was affecting his work too much. He will be succeeded on an interim basis by Terry Claeys, who had been the defensive coordinator and associate head coach. Claeys has been in this situation before, when Kill took some time off in 2013, and the Gophers went 4-4 during that stretch.

This offense is not in good shape. Vietbet customers can see Minnesota at #101 nationwide in total offense, and that does not, on the surface, seem to give them much of a chance to make advances against this Michigan squad, which has yielded fewer points per game that anybody (9.3) and is also tops in total defense. So the question becomes, what can the Gophers possibly do with these guys?

After all, Mitch Leidner is limited, as he has averaged only 6.2 yards an attempt. The run game, which thrived last season with David Cobb, who had over 1600 yards, has been decidedly non-explosive, with Rodney Smith averaging a pedestrian 4.1 yards a pop. Better foes like Nebraska and Northwestern have stopped them cold on the ground, and that is a factor that looms large here, as before Kill departed he had mentioned that this team needed to run the ball more.
