Clemson Out For Payback Against FSU and “Half-a-Winston”

By Charles Jay

Saturday’s game between the Florida State Seminoles and the Clemson Tigers has suddenly become a much more interesting proposition relative to the college football odds. And if Clemson, which took it on the chin against FSU last season and against Georgia in this year’s opener, can get its anger, we could be in for a whale of a football game when these clubs get together at 8 PM ET at Tallahassee’s Doak Campbell Stadium in an ABC-televised event.

Florida State, as all VietBet customers are aware, are the #1 team in the country, both in the AP (writers) and coaches’ polls. They are the defending national champions, and have won their two games this season, although in the opinion of some, they haven’t been all that impressive.

The Seminoles also have the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, but for this particular game, they will only have half a Heisman winner. Jameis Winston has been disciplined for bad behavior on the FSU campus, and he will have to sit out the first half of this game.

In the college football odds that have been established at VietBet, the ‘Noles are favored at home:

Florida State Seminoles -16.5
Clemson Tigers +16.5

Over 60 Points -110
Under 60 Points -110

Winston, who has been considered a certainty as a #1 draft pick when he decides to go pro, has been experiencing off-field difficulties. He is still being investigated by the police over a sexual assault case, which could take on an added degree of sensitivity right now. He has now been cited for shouting obscenities in the middle of campus and will be suspended for the first half of this game. Sophomore Sean Maguire will get the start and hold the fort down until Winston comes back from his slap on the wrist.

In last year’s meeting Winston had 444 yards passing, taking one of the major steps toward his Heisman victory. The game got out of hand early, and the 51-14 final was embarrassing for Clemson, which went into that game as the higher ranked team (#3, although they were four-point dogs in the college football odds)) but got 44% of its total yards in the last two possessions they had (i.e., garbage time).

Clemson (now #22 in the AP and #24 in the coaches’ poll) tangled with Georgia in this season’s opening game and completely laid down in the second half, as the Bulldogs took over with their running game and won 45-21. Georgia piled up 328 yards on the ground.

The consensus among many VietBet customers is that Clemson, which lost some premium offensive weapons in quarterback Tajh Boyd and wide receiver Sammy Watkins, is not as strong as last season. But there is certainly hope at the QB spot, with Cole Stoudt assuming control but sometimes yielding it to the “change of pace” guy, Deshaun Watson, who has thrown four touchdown passes in just thirteen attempts.

Florida State had a potential showcase in its opener against Oklahoma State, which had lost more lettermen than any team in the country, but struggled to a 37-31 win. Two weeks ago, the Seminoles cruised to a 37-12 win over The Citadel, failing to cover a massive 57-point spread at VietBet.

Clemson has a few things going for it when it comes to the technical trends related to the college football odds. For one thing, they have covered their last six games when getting more than six points in a conference game, and they had also covered four straight against the Seminoles until last season’s fiasco.
