Alabama vs Florida – CJ’s Take:

The Gators go to this game with a dramatic win at LSU, where they held the Tigers out of the end zone on three trips inside the ten-yard line. That game was emotional for a couple of reasons, including the fact that LSU had insisted that the matchup, which had been postponed because of Hurricane Matthew, be moved from Gainesville to Baton Rouge. Last week, Florida fell kind of flat against Florida State, losing 31-13 and failing to convert on any third down situations.

Alabama has been #1 in the nation virtually from the beginning, and they remain there, with a freshman quarterback that can do what many Crimson Tide signal-callers have been unable to do, which is run with the football. They seem to have all facets of the game rolling right now, including the fact that their special teams and defense, which have combined for a dozen touchdowns, looking more potent as a scoring machine than the Gator offense does right now.

Jalen Hurts is going to try to become the fourth quarterback to win a national championship for Nick Saban at Tuscaloosa in his first year at the helm. He didn’t even start the first game of the season, but he is well-established by now, with a 66% completion rate and 840 yards rushing. All told, Hurts has accounted for 32 touchdowns. He has helped ‘Bama increase its winning streak to 22.

He has genuine weapons at his disposal, and this includes a running back in Damien Harris (897 yards), wide receiver ArDarious Stewart and tight end OJ Howard. All of these people will be playing in the NFL.

Of course, Alabama is most recognized for its defense, which ranks #1 nationally in terms of points allowed, yards allowed and rushing yards allowed as well. And that is a principle reason they are priced at -136 to win the national title at VietBet. We already know that they are opportunistic, and what they are going to try to do is take advantage of the opportunity to take aim at Florida quarterback Austin Appleby, who was rather unsteady against both LSU and Florida State. The Tide has 41 sacks this season, which means very little relief for Appleby is in the offing. The guy Appleby backed up at Purdue, Danny Etling, who now plays for LSU, had only 92 passing yards and produced no points against Alabama.

Florida has the capacity to slow Lane Kiffin’s offensive unit. The Gators are ranked sixth in total defense, and are third in the nation against the pass. This is strong, but with an offense that is ranked #114 overall, there is a pretty good chance of enough three-and-outs that would keep Florida’s defense on the field for extended periods.
