2018 Stanley Cup Betting Odds: CJ’s Take on Game 5:

After Vegas won the first game, they haven’t been able to get in gear. And the problem has been exacerbated by the way Washington’s defenders have handled them. Incredibly, the Golden Knights have gotten off 71 shots to just 41 for the Caps, but they have precious little to show for it. And that is because there always seems to be a Capitals’ defensemen laying himself down on the ice to block a shot. Washington’s players have blocked 85 shots in the series, compared to just 41 for the Knights. And Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik, who scored his first goal in two years in Game 3, have blocked 104 between them in the playoffs alone. John Carlson, the NHL’s highest-scoring defenseman, has not blocked 42 shots, he’s been pulling double duty as a member of the power play unit – one that has scored on four of 12 chances against Vegas.

It did not help the Knights in Game 4 that they were “flagged” a lot. Their 32 minutes in penalties were the most they have had all season long, and that is not a good thing obviously when you are going up against a team that has converted those opportunities with greater frequency than all but two teams in playoff history since the statistic has been tracked. The general consensus was that even though Vegas did not necessarily have any “star” defensemen, they still had a solid and deep group, while Washington was lacking a bit beyond their first two pairings. But there has been a different story here, and the Knights all too often have left themselves thin in the middle, allowing the Caps to shoot passes across the ice and leave Marc-Andre Fleury in a position where he can’t react quickly enough. Fleury was a hot goalie in the regular season and scorching in the playoffs, with a 1.68 GAA coming in, but he has allowed sixteen goals in four games.

To turn things around, the Knights also have to find shooting lanes – plain and simple. They haven’t been all that productive with the first line, and if they can’t correct things, the series ends for them with their longest losing streak of the season (right now it is tied at three games). The slipper is falling off Cinderella, although it has been a hell of a night at the ball. Can it continue past midnight? Up until this series, they had gone 23-11 after a defeat overall and 3-0 in the playoffs. But the Caps, led by free agent-to-be coach Barry Trotz, seem to have solved them.
