2017 Sugar Bowl Odds – Betting Preview

Each of these teams has lost just one game, and for Alabama, it was an extremely painful defeat, as they dropped the annual “Iron Bowl” game to arch-rival Auburn, and by double-digits no less (26-14). They didn’t even get to make a trip to Atlanta for the SEC title game. Yet here they are, with a chance to win all the marbles.

Clemson (12-1 SU, 8-4-1 ATS) has probably had the greater transition, because the Tigers said goodbye to DeShaun Watson, their quarterback who departed for the NFL, and so Kelly Bryant is a first-year starter at QB. He is much less of a passer than his predecessor, who was finding some success in the NFL with the Houston Texans this year before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

Alabama (11-1 SU, 5-7 ATS) has a dual threat at quarterback in Jalen Hurts, who, like Bryant, may be able to do more damage with his legs than with his arm. But the one area in the passing game where Hurts excels the most is his ability to keep the ball out of the other team’s hands; he threw only one interception all season long.

Hurts was held to just 13 completions in 31 attempts in last year’s title game, where Clemson scored 21 points in the fourth quarter, including the winning touchdown with just one second remaining. Two years ago, Alabama won a 45-40 decision in another suspense-filled thriller. So this has all the markings of a great trilogy in the tradition of, say, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. But Bryant will have to be able to trade body blows to make that happen.

He threw for 2678 yards with only 13 touchdowns, so even with a trio of experienced wide receivers, including Hunter Renfrow, who caught last year’s winning TD, Clemson is not about to dominate this game through the air. What they are going to have to do is move it on the ground. They have Travis Etienne and Travien Feaster, who between them had about 1400 yards, but Bryant was the team’s leading rusher. His absence was felt in the Tigers’ only loss, as he had to leave early with an ankle injury and watched as the Syracuse Orange pulled the massive upset.

Clemson’s defense could be a telling factor; they had more sacks (44) than anyone, and they could, at the very least, force Hurts to make early decisions. Whether that results in turnovers is a whole other issue. On the other side, Saban has often talked about how he has had to make adjustments in recruiting in order to bring in defenders who can deal with ultra-mobile quarterbacks, and although Bryant is hardly a gunslinger, he does have the ability to dent this defense. Does ice water run through his veins? Remember that Clemson is not intimidated in the least by the “aura” of Saban or ‘Bama, and Dabo Swinney has won and covered nine of his last ten games in the post-season.
