Cowboys Return to Action Against Beleaguered Giants

By Charles Jay

To borrow a cliché, the New York Giants are finding different ways to lose. But if last week’s game was any indication, at least they are losing by less. The Giants, who probably have to win the rest of their games to have a shot at a playoff spot, will host the well-rested Dallas Cowboys in Sunday night football betting action that is scheduled to kick off at 8:30 PM ET from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, and televised live on NBC.

Currently the Cowboys are tied for the top spot in the NFC East with a 7-3 straight-up record, and they are 6-4 against the Vietbet odds. The Giants are 3-7 both straight-up and against the football pointspread, and they have failed to win or cover any of their last five games.

But hey, at least last week’s 16-10 defeat at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers was their first loss by single digits. And they had a genuine chance to win even though Eli Manning threw five interceptions. Is that progress? Meanwhile, the Cowboys rebounded from two straight defeats and got Tony Romo back in time for the trip to London, as they defeated Jacksonville 31-17 two weeks ago. They are now well over the jet lag and ready to proceed with their balanced attack.

Sunday night football betting odds – Cowboys vs Giants: Cowboys are laying points on the road:

Dallas Cowboys -3.5 (+100)
New York Giants +3.5 (-120)

Over 47.5 points -110
Under 47.5 points -110

The five interceptions Manning threw last week matches his career-high, which took place in the disastrous effort at Seattle last year. Going into the game, he had been on a relatively decent string where he tossed just two pick offs in seven games. Obviously the West Coast experiment took a bad turn. At the moment, Manning has eleven interceptions and is hitting 61% of his passes, and we’ll see if he continues to regress.

Football bettors know that there is something for this team to get excited about in the wake of the season-ending injury to Victor Cruz. First-round draft pick Odell Beckham has averaged 14.9 yards per reception, and more importantly, he adds a real threat of the speed element in the wide receiver group. Defenses have to consider that the Giants can stretch the field a little more. It will help if Rashad Jennings moves closer to the form he displayed before he injured his knee. Jennings got back into the lineup last week and ran for only 59 yards.

Vietbet customers have marveled at the balance Dallas has shown in its offense. Last year the Cowboys ran the ball just 35% of the time. This season, they have run it on 49% of all snaps. And why wouldn’t they? They have the most dominant running back in the league this season, and a top candidate to win the Most Valuable Player, in DeMarco Murray, whose 1233 yards on the ground dwarf the next guy on the list (Pittsburgh’s Le’Veon Bell, with 951). He is a key reason that the Cowboys have converted on 51% of their third-down chances. Tony Romo sat out a couple of games and then returned to the lineup with three touchdown passes in London. He has averaged 8.3 yards per attempt and completed 69% of his passes. And he is much more effective when the opposing pass rush can’t just rear back and take their shots at him, as they have done often in the past. The running game keeps everybody honest.

Truth be told, neither of these teams has rushed the passer very well. The Cowboys have only sixteen sacks, while the Giants have 17. But the Giants have really faltered on defense; the secondary is thin at the moment, and on the front seven, they have given up 4.9 yards per carry, which makes them especially vulnerable to Murray. Overall, Tom Coughlin’s stop unit is allowing 6.2 yards per play, and that has proven to be way too much.
