Jets vs 49ers – CJ’s Take:
The Jets really took it on the chin, in front of a national audience, as they lost 41-10 to the Indianapolis Colts in the Monday night contest. They looked at times like they were standing still, and Ryan Fitzpatrick was eventually replaced with Bryce Petty, who will get the start in this game. In his relief role, Petty threw for 135 yards and was picked off twice. He had his moments, like a 40-yard TD pass to Robby Anderson, and so coach Todd Bowles, who revealed that Petty was most likely going to start the last four games anyway, will pull the trigger on that move, as Fitzpatrick serves as the backup.
The Niners also made a quarterback change during their 26-6 loss to the Chicago Bears. Colin Kaepernick completed one pass for four yards and was sacked five times in bad weather. The Niners had only 147 total yards on the game. The only San Francisco victory of the season was a 28-0 shutout of the Los Angeles Rams in the season opener, and that was against the worst offense in the NFL.
If the 49ers can do anything well, it’s run the ball when Carlos Hyde is healthy. He ran for 92 yards last week, which was definitely a positive. And he has 686 yards on the season. But the offensive line has not opened huge holes for him (just 3.9 yards per carry) and if the Jets do something especially well on defense, at least at times, it is slow down the run, as evidenced with 3.5 ypc and 90 yards a game allowed. So this will make it difficult for the Niners to move the chains.
Petty will need some help in this game, and maybe the first guy you think of is the Jets’ own tailback, Matt Forte, who has averaged 3.7 yards on the way to 784 rushing yards on the season and has now caught 29 passes. Can Petty cut down on turnovers? That’s a tough question to answer, since he is taking baby steps at the moment.
