Falcons Jets Odds – Week 8 NFL Betting Preview

The Falcons, who were like a juggernaut last season with Kyle Shanahan as the offensive coordinator, have struggled as Steve Sarkisian, the former USC head coach, has taken over that job. It took a while for Ryan to get on the same page with Sarkisian, and evidently that hasn’t happened as of yet. The Falcons has scored 41 points over their last three games, and that wasn’t the plan at all. The Super Bowl rematch against the New England Patriots was a disaster, as they did not put the ball over the goal line until the latter stages, losing 23-7. Until that touchdown, the Falcons had gone 91 minutes without scoring, because the week before, they had dropped a 17-0 lead by allowing the Miami Dolphins to score 20 unanswered points.

And so Sarkisian is under fire, with a lot of people calling for Quinn to take over as the guy making the play calls. There is no questioning the the team has the offensive weapons, but the numbers for Ryan are nothing compared to what they were last year, when he won the MVP. He has seven touchdowns against six interceptions, and his quarterback rating is 89.3. Josh McCown, the journeyman quarterback for the Jets, who was supposed to be helpless, had a higher QB rating (91.5).

The Jets have been much more competitive than was anticipated, as they are 3-4 straight-up with a pointspread mark of 4-2-1. The Falcons are 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS.

The Jets have a different kind of problem, in that they can’t seem to put together 60 minutes of football. They have lost two-touchdown leads in each of the last two games, and allowed 17 points in the fourth quarter against the Miami Dolphins last week, as Matt Moore came to the rescue for Jay Cutler. The offensive line has not given McCown the best level of protection, as they have yielded 22 sacks.

The Falcons obviously have a pair of running backs who can give the Jets trouble. Davonta Freeman (4.7 ypc) and Tevin Coleman (5.2 ypc) can bring it, but the Jets aren’t bad in that department either, as Bilal Powell has been a surprise, and Matt Forte might be getting warmed up. One of the keys for the Falcons defense here is to keep McCown for making the small plays, not necessarily the big ones. And they have done a pretty good job thus far, limiting opponents to just six yards per attempt.

And Julio Jones got off the schneid last week, scoring his first touchdown of the season. Of course, it made little difference against New England, even though Atlanta did have 343 total yards. But the Falcons need big contributions from other receivers, including Mohammed Sanu and Taylor Gabriel, who in particular was a big-play threat last season but is averaging only twelve yards per reception. The Falcons are averaging 12.5 points less than they were last season.
