The Browns hung in and lost by only a 21-18 count to the Steelers, although it should probably be noted that Le’Veon Bell was far from being at his best. But what was significant about the event was that it was DeShone Kizer’s NFL debut at quarterback, and although he was able to help keep his team in the game, this assignment is incredibly difficult against a team with one of the better – and nastier – defense in the league.
Kizer was considered a first-round talent by many when he left Notre Dame, and the Browns, who passed up on a quarterback with the #1 overall pick in the draft (they took Myles Garrett), felt that he might be a candidate for “quarterback of the future.” He gets a huge test in his very first road game. Baltimore forced five turnovers by the Bengals, including four interceptions by Andy Dalton.

The Ravens looked very gnarly in the pre-season, and it was almost as if they knew they were going to have to compensate for Joe Flacco, who sat out much of training camp with back problems. They shut out the Cincinnati Bengals, totally flummoxing the Cincy offense, which had just 221 yards.
And the Ravens are going to have to win with defense, as Flacco had only nine completions against Cincinnati. They are generally going to be stingy up front, so it would not be altogether surprising if they decided to stop the run first (dealing with Isaiah Crowell) and make Kizer beat them, if he could. Unless some receivers really develop in Cleveland, Kizer is not going to have a lot of guys who truly threaten defenses. Losing Terrelle Pryor in the off-season left them with something of a void.

But of the top three QB’s the Browns had in camp, Kizer was the one who had a chance to stretch the field. Brock Osweiler was released, and Cody Kessler, who was intercepted only twice in almost 200 attempts last season, has a short arm. And short arms usually aren’t going to get it done against this Baltimore defense. Last year they had just 144 total yards in their loss at Baltimore.
