The Buffalo Bills may have gotten lucky a little bit in their season opener, as they drew perhaps the worst team in football as an opponent. But Carolina Panthers are just a year removed from a Super Bowl appearance, so this is a step up from the New York Jets. Even though the Jets are lousy, Buffalo still played well, and you can tell by the substantial edges that they held in the game. They held New York to just 11 first downs, 36 yards rushing and intercepted journeyman quarterback Josh McCown twice. Still, the score should not have been as close as 21-12. If you have been paying attention, you know that Buffalo has done a little housecleaning in the pre-season, dealing away talent like cornerback run Derby and wide receiver Sammy Watkins, so quarterback tie Rod Taylor has been stripped of perhaps his best in real weapon. But the bills still can run the football, and they did so 6% of the time against the Jets.
Carolina did about the same thing, as cam Newton is still working himself back into form after surgery on his rotator cuff in the off-season. Newton, who won the MVP award two seasons ago, have only 14 completions against the San Francisco 49ers in a 23-3 victory. In that game, Carolina ran on 38 of its 63 place from scrimmage.
There is a back story to this game, and involves Buffalo’s first-year coach, Sean McDermott, who was the defensive coordinator with the Panthers. Therefore, he knows Newton quite well. So let’s assume that his defensive personnel will make things a little rougher for Newton then San Francisco did.
Running backs could rule the day; LaSean McCoy had 110 yards last week, and there is no doubt about the fact that he will once again be Buffalo’s principal weapon. Rookie Christian McCaffrey, the first-round draft choice at Stanford, got 18 touches in his pro debut. He is important to the Carolina offense because he adds versatility to the mix.
