As Trubisky has “managed” the offense, the Bears’ defense has been good enough to post these last two victories. But the rookie has completed just a dozen passes in the last two games, and his offense was on the field for about 21 minutes. Of course, it helps that Chicago has a couple of capable running backs in Jordan Howard (560 yards) and Tarik Cohen (4.5 yards per carry), but this ground attack only had 68 yards last week, and the 153 total yards is ultimately not going to be enough for them to trade points with the Saints, especially with Drew Brees pulling the trigger.
Now New Orleans is hot, having won and covered four games in a row. They stand at 4-2 straight-up and against the NFL odds. They did take advantage of the Green Bay Packers team with Brett Hundley making his first NFL start last week, but nonetheless they came away with a 26-17 victory at Lambeau field.
Of course what was huge for Chicago last week was a milestone game from their rookie safety, Eddie Jackson, who came up with two defensive touchdowns, one of them for 75 yards and the other for 76 yards, becoming the only NFL player ever to do it. That, plus a rather erratic Cam Newton, who tossed two interceptions, contributed to the Chicago victory. But the Bears had only five first downs, and you are not going to win many games like that.
Here are some things you might want to consider – Trubisky has completed only 50% of his passes, and he has been sacked nine times, even though he has only attempted 48 throws. These are pretty weak numbers, and so a lot of things are going to have to go right for Chicago to win this game. They are posting decent defensive numbers, as they have allowed the opposition a little less than six yards per attempt, but does all of that count a whole lot against Brees, who is completing 69% and makes decisions quick enough that he’s been sacked only five times in six games? Well, maybe there’s some hope for the Bears, in the sense that New Orleans has turned the ball over five times in the last two games. That comes after no turnovers in the first four.
The expectation here is that Chicago will continue to play safety-first, and let’s keep in mind that if nothing else, the Saints are pretty opportunistic in the secondary, with eight interceptions. But the Bears have a difficult time stretching out this defense, which will give coordinator Dennis Allen a few options. We could see a double-digit Saints victory here.
