2018 Minnesota Vikings Odds and Betting Preview

Cousins is one of those quarterbacks who has become somewhat expert in running the West Coast offense. Over his last three seasons, he has thrown for over 13,000 yards, and last year he basically played all season amidst speculation that he would be leaving the Washington Redskins. Indeed, he did. The Vikings were expected to go with Sam Bradford at the quarterback spot, while also waiting for Teddy Bridgewater to become physically eligible to play. But Bradford got hurt in the opening game, and ultimately Minnesota settled on Case Keenum, who had essentially been a journeyman. What Keenum did was have the season of his career, but apparently the Vikings’ brass felt they would be in better hands with Cousins, who has a three-year contract worth almost $90 million.

For that kind of money, you are expecting no less than a Super Bowl berth, especially from a team that powered its way to a 13-3 record last year. The Vikings are pretty solid all around; they ended a little bit to the offensive mix with wide receiver Kendall Wright, who came over from the Chicago Bears, and Trevor Siemian, who ironically is being replaced by Keenum in Denver, will now be Cousins’ backup.

He is not really a newcomer, but Dalvin Cook missed the vast majority of his rookie season with a knee injury. He showed flashes of brilliance, so they are very excited if they can get a healthy season out of him. There is a new offensive coordinator, as mentioned, and he is John DeFilippo, who served as quarterback coach in Philadelphia for the past two years. Minnesota’s offense was 11th-best in the NFL last year, and that was more than good enough.

That’s because the defense was #1 in the league, in both yardage and points allowed. And they might have actually upgraded that unit. The most significant new arrival might be Sheldon Richardson, who played at a Pro Bowl level with the New York Jets and is a very good interior pass rusher. And there is very little question of the quality of Mike Hughes, a cornerback from Central Florida who came in the first round.

There is no reason to believe the Vikings won’t tailor their approach very much to Cousins’ liking. So perhaps that makes the offense a little better. Incrementally, Minnesota may have done enough to get over the hump in the NFC; that is unless all the new blood with the Los Angeles Rams can come through as expected.
