2018 Arizona Cardinals and Betting Preview

Stepping in for Palmer were Blaine Gabbert and Drew Stanton, who threw twelve touchdown passes with eleven interceptions between them. They are both gone, as this team has made a complete overhaul at the QB position. They drafted Josh Rosen at of UCLA with the 10th overall pick, and he might just be the most NFL-ready quarterback who was available. Will he get the opportunity to start right away? No, it is likely that he will not. But he does not have to; the Cardinals inked Sam Bradford, the former Heisman Trophy winner, to a contract, and he will keep the seat warm until Rosen is ready. Of course, Bradford has designs on keeping the job for a while, and only a couple of years ago, he set the NFL record for completion percentage while he was with the Minnesota Vikings. Don’t underestimate his ability to keep this team in contention. Mike Glennon, who had a decent rookie season with Tampa Bay but hasn’t done much since, might wind up as the backup, for now.

David Johnson makes a world of difference in the offense all by himself. In 2016 he have the incredible total of 2118 yards from scrimmage, combining rushing and receiving, and he was everyone’s favorite on the fantasy draft board before he went down with a wrist injury. If he can play the whole season, look out.

Also keep an eye out for rookie wide receiver Christian Kirk, drafted in the second round out of Texas A&M. With the Cardinals having lost wide receivers Jaron Brown and John Brown, he has a chance to step right in as a starter. And Arizona has rebuilt the right side of its offensive line, with Justin Pugh coming over from the Giants and Andre Smith from the Bengals. This is good news for the running game.

One of the wild-cards (pardon the pun) here is the introduction of a new head coach. Bruce Arians retired, and the Cardinals reached out to Steve Wilks, who had spent one year as the defensive coordinator in Carolina. Obviously he has his own ideas of what to do with the stop unit, and maybe this comes with something of a risk. This defense was #6 in the NFL in yardage allowed, although they were just 25th in scoring defense. Wilks is going to change the scheme, going to a 4-3 alignment, and Arizona said goodbye to a few key performers, including linebacker Carlos Dansby, safety Tyrann Mathieu and veteran cornerback Tramon Williams. They did not add a lot of players on the defensive side of the ball, or in the draft, for that matter. Perhaps the most impactful newcomer will be former Houston Texan Marcus Williams, who could be starting at one of the corner positions.

Wilks is the kind of coach who might bring the kind of energy Arizona needs to be competitive in a division where Los Angeles and San Francisco might be the front-runners. He wants to take a hard-nosed approach, and obviously the ground game can be built around the multi-talented Johnson. Bradford will likely fit in as someone engineering the high-percentage passing game, so we would not discount the Cardinals’ ability to be competitive in this division at all.
