The Case for the Alabama Crimson Tide

2017 NCAA Football Championship Odds Georgia vs Alabama Betting PreviewThis is obviously a very familiar place for the Alabama Crimson Tide, as they are playing for the national championship for the third straight season. There were a lot of people who talked about how perhaps a team like Ohio State, which won the Big Ten championship, should have been in the four-team playoff field instead, since Alabama did not even get to the SEC title game. So Nick Saban’s squad answered that emphatically with a 24-6 victory over Clemson, a team that had given them life-and-death the previous two years, in the semi-final game that was played in the Sugar Bowl. Now they have the opportunity to win a fifth national title under Saban as they square off against the Georgia Bulldogs in the national championship game, beginning at 8 PM ET on Monday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. If you are a VietBet customer, you’ll really get reduced juice on this game, which means you don’t have to lay the customary -110, and then after the big event gets underway, you can continue placing wagers in real time with the help of Life Betting Ultra.

Alabama was #1 in the nation in both major polls until losing 26-14 to Auburn in the Iron Bowl. At that point, Auburn, which also had a victory over Georgia, was headed to the SEC title game for a rematch with the Bulldogs. Georgia got some revenge in that one, to the tune of 28-7, which sent them into the playoff field. Alabama got the nod ahead of Ohio State, generally on the basis of the fact that they had only one defeat, while the Buckeyes had two.

Interestingly enough, Saban has won three national titles with the Crimson Tide in seasons where he has, in fact, lost a game. And judging from the defensive stand they put up against Clemson, these guys are going to be very difficult for Georgia to deal with, even though the Bulldogs have plenty of talent and depth in the backfield.

Alabama held Clemson to just 188 yards of offense, and they completely stifled what quarterback Kelly Bryant wanted to do. Of course, Bryant did not bring the same skills to the table that DeShaun Watson did, particularly on the passing end. When the Tide faces Georgia, they will be going up against a genuine “game manager” in freshman Jake Fromm, who is a classic example of a guy who plays “within himself.”

In a very intriguing interview ESPN conducted with Alabama’s former offensive coordinator, Lane Kiffin, he made mention of the fact that Alabama definitely preferred to face Georgia, as opposed to Oklahoma, which came out the overtime loser in the Rose Bowl. He says that because Georgia poses less of a threat from the quarterback position, whereas they have had difficulty with mobile quarterbacks who can improvise and take the ball down and run with it from scrimmage. Georgia does not play the kind of spread offense that Alabama has difficulty with; they are in a pro set, and they largely depend on the running backs. They have great backs indeed, including Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, and they demonstrated what they could do against Oklahoma, but Alabama has enough speed on defense and is gap-sound enough to deal with that. They allowed only 257 yards per game, which was best in the country, and they have been #2 in the metric of Rushing Success Rate on defense. So they are equipped to deal with the best Georgia has to throw at them (or run at them, if you will).

Between these two quarterbacks, Jalen Hurts is the guy who extends plays better and can better neutralize a pass rush. Hurts is not necessarily a tremendous pure passer, but you can’t argue with the fact that he has thrown only one interception this season. And the Crimson Tide can move the ball on the ground well enough to rank eighth in the country in that category. They also have the best receiver on the field, by far, in Calvin Ridley, who has more receptions than all other wide receivers on the roster combined, and is targeted 31% of the time, but still manages to get open and be a threatening presence for the opposition.

Nick Saban has spawned a lot of disciples from his “coaching tree,” and none of them to date have had any success against him. In fact, Saban is 11-0 straight-up against former assistant coaches, with an average winning margin of 14 points. And it just so happens that Kirby Smart, the head coach at Georgia who has done a great job in just two seasons, was Alabama’s defensive coordinator for eight years and four national championships. A bad omen.

The Case for the Georgia Bulldogs

The Georgia Bulldogs never made it to the national championship game while Mark Richt was their coach, but they have indeed reached the precipice in the second year under Kirby Smart, who may have played his collegiate ball at Georgia, but served a large part of his coaching apprenticeship under Nick Saban with the Alabama Crimson Tide. So now student meets up with teacher on Monday night for all the marbles. This game begins at 8 PM ET at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and while VietBet customers will have the opportunity to place wagers on the game in real time as they access the state-of-the-art software available through Live Betting Ultra.

Georgia has a veteran defense, bringing back all eleven starters from last season, and they have consistently been among the top 15 stop units in the nation in all the major categories. They have been particularly tough on opposing passing games, limiting them to just 5.7 yards per attempt. They even held Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield to less than 300 passing yards, which can be considered something of an accomplishment, even though their semi-final game in this playoff, which was contested in the Rose Bowl, turned out to be a donnybrook, ending in overtime with Georgia a 54-48 winner.

One of the things you have to salute the Bulldogs for is their ability to adapt after losing their starting quarterback. This was supposed to be a coming-of-age season for Jacob Eason, who was highly touted coming out of high school, but he got hurt in the opener against Appalachian State and gave way to freshman Jake Fromm, who has shown incredible poise, with 23 touchdown passes and only five interceptions. What really powers the Bulldogs is the ground attack, and they really put themselves on display against the Sooners, as the dynamic duo of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel combined for 326 yards on the ground.

If we are talking about the “familiarity” factor, that edge might go to the Bulldogs, since Smart, with all those years in the Alabama system, and having recruited a lot of the players on the Crimson Tide roster, knows exactly how his mentor does business. But that will somehow have to translate into a winning formula in this game. Part of it will have to be shutting down Calvin Ridley, who is Alabama’s leading receiver by a hundred miles. Ridley has caught 59 passes, and all of the other wide receivers on the Alabama team have not combined to catch that many. So it would stand to reason that if you could minimize Ridley’s effect on the game, you could take much of their offense’s game-changing ability away.

And when you talk about Georgia’s backfield, you are definitely looking at three guys who, if they can get loose beyond the first wall of defenders, can take any carry all the way. You got to see that with both Chubb and Michel in the Rose Bowl, and let’s not forget about the true freshman, D’Andre Swift, who averaged a whopping 8.2 yards per carry.

A lot may depend upon George’s ability to contain Jalen Hurts when he tries to move outside the pocket with the football. VietBet patrons should remember that we are talking about a quarterback who has run for 768 yards, and can escape pressure from the pass rush. Maybe they can keep him under wraps, and if they do, they won’t necessarily force a turnover (keeping in mind that her test run only one interception), but they will prevent him from making plays, whether it is an intermediate or longer routes. Having the best linebacker in the nation (the Butkus Award winner, in fact) in Raquon Smith is going to be a big factor in all of this.

While the Bulldogs looked rather permissive much of the time against Oklahoma, don’t lose sight of the fact that this is a whole different kind of offense they are facing; one that is not as wide-open as the one that gained 360 yards against them in the first half in Pasadena. So don’t even use that as a barometer. Alabama plays it closer to the vest, but that is the kind of team the Bulldogs may be able to keep under control, while they let their own running game make the big plays.
